　　霍华德（瑞安·奥尼尔 Ryan O'Neal 饰）是一名音乐学家，他带着自己的未婚妻尤妮丝（玛德莲·卡恩 Madeline Kahn 饰）前往旧金山，霍华德发现了一块火成岩石标本，这个标本能够证明音乐的起源，霍华德想要凭借着这个标本获得拉雷比基金会颁发的奖学金。　　霍华德和尤妮丝住在一间名为布里斯托尔的旅店中，同样下榻酒店的，还有霍斯金斯太太（Mabel Albertson 饰）、史密斯先生（迈克尔·墨菲 Michael Murphy 饰）和霍华德的狂热追求者朱迪（芭芭拉·史翠珊 Barbra Streisand 饰）。巧合的是，他们四个人所拎的行李箱竟然一模一样。接待员弗里斯（斯特凡·吉拉什 Stefan Gierasch 饰）想要霍斯金斯太太箱子里的珠宝，间谍琼斯（菲利普·罗斯 Philip Roth 饰）觊觎史密斯先生手里的秘密文件，阴差阳错之下，一场大乱斗开始了。
